A Look Back: Spring/Summer 2012 Haute Couture

The 12 most prestigious fashion houses of the fashion community get to show their haute couture collections every season in Paris, France. Monochromatic looks at Alexis Mabille, Donetella being back on the lineup, fantastic set at Chanel, new creative director for Dior, and everything in-between was truly amazing. here is my usual 8 after the jump! xo, Estelle

1) Givenchy
The oversized nose jewelry and major earring hoops were tastefully styled with the amazing couture dresses. This collection to me, captured the essence of couture: wearable masterpieces. The darkness of the pieces had a romantic edge to it and sparkled during the showcase.

2) Atelier Versace
Although i was expecting long elegant dresses, the sculptured collection didn't disappoint me at all. The minimal smokey eye makeup shifted the attention perfectly to the small, but wonderful, 15 piece collection. Corseted gowns with metallic detailing put this collection at the top of my list.

3) Elie Saab
This collection just screams red carpet. Periwinkle blue and cotton candy pink, pastel greens was the main color scheme. The ponytails in my mind was one of the best aspects of the show; they were chic and a stubble statement. And one more thing, can I please get married in the last look that Toni wore?

4) Chanel
Let's talk about the amazing set first. Lagerfeld gave everyone first class treatment including flight attendants serving champagne. The different shades of blue was apparent. The models walked down the plane isle with the hands gently tucked into pockets adding sophistication. The amount of embellishment was perfect and just the right amount.

5) Giambattista Valli
Giambattista told Style.com that he wanted to put everything he learned about couture in one show. Sounds tragic, because they always say 'less is more!' But it turned out to be a wonderfully elegant show with cremes, whites, and pinks as the major accents as well as flower head pieces.

6) Jean Paul Gaultier
Amy Winehouse inspired much? the winged eyeliner and bumblebee nest hair was a definite tribune to the late singer. Although it sparked some controversy in the family, Gaultier payed respect to Amy in the peak of her career.

7) Christian Dior
A relatively safe collection. actually to safe for me. High fashion is about taking risks, being creative, and directing fashion into ways ordinary people would never think of. But instead I think it brought more people into the world of couture; I feel like people think its more assessable after seeing this collection. It was no doubt pretty and elegant with layers of hand stitched work.

8) Bouchra Jarrar
I actually only heard of this designer one time before, and that was during FW 12 after the couture shows. There were definitely some risks in this collection. Showing fur during Spring/Summer and the heavy use of fabric might have rattled some critics but it was agreed that it was put together beautifully. The only downfall is that I think it could have been a better to show it in July.
